Building a Fast Metabolism

Simply put your metabolism converts food into energy. It is a biochemical process that our body undertakes to extract macro and micro nutrients from the food we eat and convert those calories from food into energy for our day to day life and training needs. Food = Fuel.

This biochemical reaction process inside out bodies is very complex, with no single metabolism alike. It can be affected by the current state of your digestive system, your hormones, stress levels, vitamin and mineral deficiencies previous dieting history etc.
The way you currently look, how you feel on the inside and the levels of energy you have is directly related to the food you eat and the exercise you perform. The faster your metabolism is the more efficient your body is at converting food into energy instead of storing it as fat.
Did you know that your metabolism is determined 66% by the amount of muscle mass you have, 17% influences are from exercise, 12% from nutrition and 5% from temperature regulation (Metabolic Precision, 2000).
What this means is the more muscle mass you have the faster your metabolism will be. I know you are now thinking… “But everyone says that abs are made in the kitchen”, that surely nutrition accounts for far more than 12% of results? Well yes it does!
You simply cannot build lean muscle mass and a healthy metabolism without good nutrition…end of storey!
The act of resistance training actually tears your muscles, breaking them down and creating an inferior metabolism. It is your day to day nutrition, as well as your nutrition directly around your training sessions that repair your micro muscle tears and build your muscles bigger, equalling more muscle mass, less body fat and a faster metabolism.
In addition the more muscle mass you possess, the more calories and most importantly the more micronutrients they need to maintain and continue to grow.
Take for example my personal competition journey. My picture above on the left dates back to my very first Fitness Competition in 2013, I weighed a mere 49kg on stage at 160.5cm. Fast forward to 2015 I now weigh 54kg on stage and can consume 600calories more in my calorie deficit phase of leaning down. It has taken me 3 years of building my metabolism (increasing my muscle mass) to be able to eat more, get lean faster and stay lean.
Consistency to your diet, eating enough protein, carbohydrates, fats, fibre and micronutrients as well as a progressive overload style of training is very important for the long run. I view the whole process as a lifestyle journey, it’s never been a chore for me, and I see good nutrition as fuel and enjoy the foods I eat.
It has taken me many years to gain this knowledge, from investing in great competition coaches, nutrition courses and my own personal experience. There’s nothing more I want then to help other girls build a great metabolism and evolve to experiencing the whole process as an amazing lifestyle. As they say fitness is a journey, not a destination.
Therefore, I have put together three phases of meal plans and training programs to take you through this journey; to progressively build a fast metabolism like mine.
